Hutterite chicken has a reputation for quality, and for good reason! The birds we get in from Lone Pine Colony near Stettler, Alberta are free of hormones and antibiotics and certified humane raised and handled. Plus they are plump and tasty - the "original big chickens, like the ones you used to see growing up," says Tony Entz, who runs the barns for Lone Pine Chicken.
The key to getting quality birds is to give them the room and time to grow naturally. At Lone Pine, the free-run chickens are raised a full seven to nine weeks, roaming around the pens eating and drinking anytime they want. They're raised in fresh air and sunshine in the summer and moved into heated and well-ventilated bars in the winter. The chickens are also fed grains grown right on the farm with no soy or animal by-products.
