They've done it again! The good folks at Fromagerie du Presbytère have yet another Canadian Cheese Award under their belt: the 2018 Cheese of the Year is ... Louis d'Or!
Louis d’Or is a firm pressed raw cow’s milk cheese that is at once fruity and nutty with a sweet milky linger and smooth texture. Inspired by mountain cheeses from the Jura region like Comté and Gruyère, this homegrown version is made from organic milk produced at the Louis d’Or farm across the street from the fromagerie.
To find the perfect pairing, we asked our friends at 5 Vines and they gave us three drinks to pair with Louis d'Or.
1. Torres 5G Cinco Garnachas
Since Louis d'Or is similar to European mountain cheeses, a dry Old World Grenache is the perfect pairing. With a beautiful raspberry nose, the unoaked Grenache pulls out fruit flavours from the cheese and has a just-right acidity to balance the complex flavour.
2. Dageraad Blonde
This Belgian style medium-dry blonde ale brings out a nutty side to Louis d’Or, thanks to the beer’s Pilsner malt. Its strong floral notes and spicy fennel flavour subdue the cheese’s fruity notes while the beer’s tart effervescence cuts through the subtle barnyard funk of the organic cheese.
3. Cidre Artisinal Le Brun
We don’t always save the best for last, but this time we sure did. If you like the odoriferous quality of raw milk washed rind cheeses, that is. This apple cider from the western tip of France has a certain horse blanket characteristic on its own that, combined with Louis d’Or, brings that barnyard funk we were talking about to the forefront of your taste buds. The cider also boasts fine Champagne-like bubbles and a tart sweetness to brighten your palate and leave you wanting more.
Louis d'Or is on Stockboy Special for 15% during September! Pick up this award-winning cheese for $6.39/100g. Shop online here.
